Idaho has the highest rate of incarceration for women in the nation. We are working to change that. In Fall 2023, Idaho Justice Project is launching an ambitious project, unprecedented in state history, to reduce the number of women in prison in Idaho by 50% in 5 years. We will publish a report in Fall 2023 about what is driving Idaho to hold this title and then convene a Task Force of 50 women to design and implement a strategy to achieve this reduction.

In October 2022, Idaho Justice Project was awarded the
Scoggin Impact Award during
Boise Entrepreneur Week to further drive its work on the Idaho Women’s Incarceration Project.

We are bringing the issue of women’s incarceration to the capitol. In 2022, we hosted a legislative reception for lawmakers to highlight women across the state who are justice-impacted and doing amazing work to help their communities and to raise awareness about Idaho’s status as a leader in women’s incarceration. We believe in the power of second chances and know we can create a system that locks up fewer women, enables community-based care for mental health and substance use, and allows women coming out of incarceration to thrive. See the women we highlighted here.
